Read for Nothing Else but to Learn!
I guess this is one of the best articles I have ever written. I wrote this article after reading two free e-books that have contributed to my online marketing business. How much time we spend reading for no profit is amazingly discouraging. People can go out of their way to read about the weather, problems, sports and many unbeneficial content. Many do so to have basis for contributing convincingly in discussions over lunch or in the gym. You may have your own reasons that you alone know if they do add value to your life.
I, as much as you know this, am a witness to that those who win are the ones who go all out to achieve their goals. They however don’t haste forging ahead without equipping themselves with knowledge. To get knowledge you need to be exposed to the right information, and add a little more effort learning from it. It is not today’s lesson to state the deference between reading and learning, but yes there is a big difference between the two. You know as much as I do that there are those people whom you and society thought are destined for doom yet they took serious precaution on success information they laid their hand on, and today they are ahead of you. They were clever enough to research, access and apply the knowledge to the best of their potential.
I will however caution you to be selective when choosing information, yet you shouldn’t have an attitude before time. Some destructive information can seem good when nicely presented and in the same token, good information can be annoying and ignorable when poorly presented. Its best for you to give yourself time to listen whenever it’s a verbal presentation or read if it is a document before you can judge. It goes without saying that the information you seek should be tasty to your eyes.
Judging Content
It’s normal to be skeptic on any motivational speech or book you get. You may quickly jump into conclusions and think it’s the same old pyramid scheme junk yet it could be legit. However, there are methods I have used to assess the information and they are:
- I pick another book/ebook on the same subject and read it. I may pick a third one or even the forth. In each case, I change the author, their geographical location and the organization. All information that is repeated by all authors is most likely authentic. Like I highlighted earlier on, this is not possible if you haven’t worked on your reading culture. As a result, I clearly know the following:
-
- Resourceful and unique content is a good basis for starting on building traffic for your website.
- Bought traffic is a short term solution
- Unless you do something differently, the results wont change
- People who succeed are not lucky but the are clear on what they want
- Not all business can be good for me
- I move on to consider relevance to my interests. I ask questions like:
-
- Does the technology I have support the idea?
- Will the end results make me happy?
- Is there a clear method/process to follow to reach the goals?
- I consider the cost involved to achieving the desired results. Cheap is expensive. So it you do nothing to get something, it is a obvious invaluable piece of information.
You may add your own points that can help you decide. Your gut feelings are not always going to guide you correctly but you must apply yourself.
The Right Attitude
It’s not only information sold that is good for use. There is a lot of resourceful information offered for free, whether online or offline. In fact, if you dedicate to read the bits and pieces of free information available online/offline and bring such pieces together, you get information as good as that of information with a price tag. The trick is focusing on a single niche and keep reading new content on it. The internet in itself is an information bank that covers almost any market you can think about.
In short, the right attitude is:
- Taking time to search for targeted information and;
- Having a reading habit.
Don’t just download information to store in your hard drive or keep as hard copies in your files. Words are only useful when read with understanding.
Understand Your Taste Buds
As a young boy, I have attempted reading numerous books but only to go as far as fascination can go. Some books I only read the introduction, others the first few chapters and many only the covering letter. I have many times checked out books from the library and had to return them without even opening the cover.
Guess how I changed that habit when I started reading on my passion, ‘I went for what is tasty to my eyes’. I recall recently reading through a plus 900 pages A 4 book. I have in my life read and finished at least two books in a day yet I thought it impossible to do that. This has only been possible with those tittles on Motivation, Business and Internet Marketing. I have never thought I’d grow to read so quickly and so many books/information products. Just today I read with understanding a 25 page e-book within 2 hours and learnt a lot of information that I shall live to practice in my internet marketing adventure.
I have in the past been questioned on how I manage writing books when it is so much a challenge for many just to read. I always say, ‘Read on what you like and you’ll never know when you finished the book’. Not all books are good for you. Today people are making millions of dollars on music, but it’s not all of us that can make it in music and it’s not always about your singing voice.
Be Yourself
Can I conclude by saying that the phrase ‘be yourself’ is self explanatory. You cannot be somebody else, no matter how hard you try. One Sunday on a mother’s day service some years ago a young man stood up to sing Kirk Franklin’s song dedicated to his late mother. It became very difficult for this fellow to dedicate the song to a living mother while the original lyrics and rime was to somebody who had passed on. To those who knew the song it turned out to be real drama. Therefore, I implore you to be unique and do what you alone can do.
