Modeling is a lucrative career and big business today. Many models are making a living purely from modeling, let alone those who are millionaires and their names have become a brand from this lucrative vocation. Tyra Banks, an American successful model, has come up with a competition that has attracted interests from all four corners of the world, called ‘Americas Next Top Model’.

 

I have watched several of these programme from one satellite channel from home and have learnt a serious business lesson as the events unfold. I know this show is a very good example on how the many lucrative business ventures eliminate prospects. Listed below are lessons that are critical for achieving one’s ultimate dream career.

 

  1. All Legal Vocations/Careers Look Lucrative

 

It seems as if people have a tendency to focus on the glamorous picture a career present from those who have made it, and overlooking the road that leads to such success. It’s good enough that Tyra makes auditions before we even see any of these girls on screen, yet some who from their character and speech portray apathy, make it to the show.

 

Comments that we often pass to some of the girls are interesting because sometimes even before the judges do their work, to some degree we can pre-tell what their decision would be. With some you can tell that the reality of working towards becoming a model is beyond what they thought and they realize that it’s not a dream to pursue anymore. I always believe that people who have confirmed that their dream career cannot work for them are better than those who wish to do something but never attempt to try it. Those who know have achieved because they now can forget about that dream and look forward to something else.

 

A challenge I pause to you is this, ‘what effort have you made to find out if you can really make it in the dream you’ve always wanted’. You need not spend a lot to get started on your dream. Consulting friends and family on how to get started is one simple and cost free exercise you can do. You could arrange for informal meeting with the relevant professionals and get knowledge that will make you decide your way forward.

 

  1. Passion is Key

 

You need to go beyond seeing a lucrative profession, but look inside you. Like I have detailed in the article ‘It Always is a Long Way Coming’ that unless you have a tick layer of perseverance, you cannot take it through to the end. As it always is the case, 99.9 percent wont do.

 

This past week the girls were assigned to make a commercial for a beauty product. The conditions were so challenging that one girl declared that she can’t take the bright light put in front of her. The response from Trya’s team was very interesting ‘It is what a model should do…!’ This meant that as long as the lady wanted to remain in the show, she had to do the commercial.

 

I have also learnt a lot about modeling. Some activities are really scary and demanding. Modeling is not about wearing promotional clothes, appearing on magazines, receiving special treatment, luxury cars, being spokespersons for companies, etc. but it is painfully about complying to the call such as dieting, taking risky shots, sitting long hours in salons, staying away from family and working hard on one’s excellence. These were just my observations from the many shows that have been privileged to watch.

 

As a business principle, doing what you like will make you achieve the following:

 

  • a. Keep doing it and multiplying your success
  • b. Understand your product/service better
  • c. Take the heat that comes with the business industry
  • d. Enjoy the business

 

All these have been demonstrated in this particular show.

 

  1. Professionalism and Focus are a Must

 

Professionalism and focus goes hand in hand with commitment. We all know that man have a lot to look at in a lady, yet these ladies have to sometimes work with males under some difficult conditions. I won’t mention these conditions because they may digress me from my topic. However, looks, gestures and behavior from man could speak volumes to girls, yet professionalism demand that the girls never react but focus on the modeling business. Modeling outfit could also be more revealing than what the models themselves can appreciate, but because it is demanded from any person who’d call themselves models, they have to abide.

 

Girls that join the show are human just like everybody, but the word fear shouldn’t be heard for an aspiring model. I’m sure you are a witness that the flying model photos and those shots with lions and scary animals are not graphic work but real life captures photos.

 

Even though some girls could have boy friends and I’m sure they miss them a lot, but I haven’t seen any of them bring their boyfriends to the hostels. I don’t want to believe that it happens behind the scenes.

 

  1. Victory Attracts Desirable Attention

 

As the girls are eliminated one by one and the competition gets tougher, the succeeding gains more popularity and attracts attention of sponsors and supporters. I like the part where Tyra asks the final contestants to say anything they’d want to say to her. You just can tell that the girls want the success more than when they first came for the show.

 

You therefore need to be encouraged each time you get a breakthrough in your venture. This will give you strength to want more of the victory and thus making it to your ultimate goal.
