Watch out, Everybody Can Give You Advice
I have learnt that people are always ready to advice others. Pick a man in the street and ask him what good business practice is, they’ll tell you something valid. Just about everybody can advice you, even the devil can; as long as they can talk. From pre-school going children to the retired, advice can be sought and found. Watch out because advice can be good or bad and the liberty to choose lies with you.
Many people have the tendency to assume higher level positions of experience, education and practice for themselves yet they are not. A good example is that of multi-level marketing (MLM) distributors such as QuestNet, Amway, Forever Living, Uniliver, Canadian Diamond, etc. that often tell you of success they haven’t attained. You will agree with me that most often their advice leads to more bankruptcy than acquiring wealth, at least 88 percent of the times (internet researched percentage).
To get above average advice, be on the watch for:
- Different / unique message delivery,
- Evident experience and
- Broad research from relevant sources.
You definitely can’t go wrong with advice based on any or a combination of the three. I will go through each of these to elaborate on my point.
1. Different Message Delivery
If it’s not documented, it cannot be referenced later. Advisers can deny or twist their intended meaning on their advice. Most often, advice selection is voluntary and no one is to blame but you for the results thereof. Some advice comes free or even cheap yet it is of great value and some can come at a high cost and benefit no one or its application leads to disaster.
Normally, good advice would come professionally documented. Professional in this regard means being endorsed as a sign of ownership by authors. This could be in acceptable presentation formats including books, slide shows, e-books, videos, audios, etc. The quality of packaging may not be much of an issue; yet good quality packaging can be a positive sign of excellence and validity.
2. Evident Experience
Which medical doctor would you prefer? The one who has been in practice for more that 10 years or the one fresh from university? The answer is obvious, the one who has been in practice for some time is most likely ideal. However, it always works best if you know the physical practitioner’s office and most importantly have a word with some patients that have seen this doctor.
This principle can apply even to the method of message delivery. For example, it is presumably assumed that a text book’s 5th edition is way better than the 1st edition. You definitely expect more benefit from a re-built, revised, reconsidered, reconstructed piece of advice than the first deployed.
Don’t just listen to an eloquent speaker without considering where they come from. The eloquent speaker is not necessarily the best advisor. You may get the best advice from someone whom you must earnestly beg to talk to. But if they have the experience, they surely are better positioned to give you timeless advice.
3. Broad Research from relevant Sources
Most academics excel at giving a concise report on specific subjects based on broad research that may have taken lots of time. These are not to be discarded because they lack the experience, but should be considered based on the relevance of resources used to address that particular subject.
Good researchers always reference their sources. Normally, the quantity of used material is not so important yet its quality marks the difference from the rest. The difference can also be transferred into a conducive or relevant method of delivery.
These three qualities identify with established individuals and entities. You can agree with me that if you are in South Africa, the following links lead to companies that offer valuable advice in the specified industries:
- Dept consolidation
- Car Hire
- Second hand cars
- Vacation/holiday accomodation
- Internet affiliate marketing
Do I expect comments from this article? Yes I do, but even if no one comments, I know that this article can save you from adopting a well structured yet destructive advice. I actually offer lots of free valuable advice in this blog. I’m today working on my 2nd edition of my best seller ‘Business Insight and Money Making Ideas’.
